Mark Williams, Member of Parliament for Ceredigion, has slammed as “disgraceful” the fact that the County has the second highest level of slow internet connections in the entire of the UK.
According to data from Ofcom and the House of Commons Library, Ceredigion has the second highest percentage of slow internet connections (those under 2 Mb/s) in the UK at 18% of those with internet access.
The report also shows that Ceredigion has one of the worst average download speeds in the country, with the County being number 646 out of 650 for average speed.
Mark said “It is absolutely disgraceful that we are being left behind the rest of the country when it comes to broadband access. Internet access has become increasingly vital not only for individuals but also for businesses in the County who rely on the internet to attract business, to bank and to interact with Government services.
“While the Government talks about superfast broadband being available to 95% of the UK by 2017, much of Ceredigion is in this last 5%, and many people do not even have access to reliable internet with moderate speeds.
“There is much talk about the importance of rural broadband, but both the Welsh and UK Government’s need to take real action to fix this growing digital divide.”
