Furlough must remain in place until June 2021

Responding to the announcement that the furlough scheme has been extended until March 2021 by the Chancellor, the Liberal Democrats have said it must be extended further to June 2021.
Cadan ap Tomos, Welsh Liberal Democrat Senedd candidate for Ceredigion, said:
"The UK Government's incompetence and indecision has harmed businesses in Ceredigion. Their support wasn't there when we needed it most, yet the taps are turned back on the moment it suits Conservative strongholds in the south of England.
"Short-term decision making does not give businesses the certainty they need, and can easily cost local people their jobs. While this u-turn is definitely welcome, the delay will have cost businesses and individuals as they were left in uncertainty.
"The UK Government needs to give Ceredigion's businesses and workers the protection they need, by extending this vital safety net until at least June 2021."
Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Christine Jardine MP added:
"It was clear to everyone that the furlough scheme needed to be extended to stop people falling into poverty, however until now the Chancellor stubbornly and cold-heartedly refused.
“The Liberal Democrats are clear the furlough scheme must remain in place until June 2021 if Ministers are to support all those in need. The Chancellor must put this in place immediately as, so far, his knee-jerk reactions have left far too many wondering how they will put food on the table, rather than ensuring no-one is left behind as he promised.”
