Following representations by Ceredigion’s Welsh Liberal Democrat MP Mark Williams, the Secretary of State for Wales has agreed to meet with Traws Link Cymru to discuss their campaign calling for the re-opening of the Aberystwyth to Carmarthen rail line.
In this week’s question session to Wales Office Ministers, Mark Williams highlighted the Traws Link Cymru group’s campaign to the Secretary of State, emphasising to him that re-opening this line would be immensely beneficial to the local area, and across Wales. The Secretary of State agreed to meet with the group, praising Mark Williams for his work as a strong voice for the Mid-Wales area, particularly on the provision of transport links.
Commenting Mark Williams said:
‘I am pleased the Secretary of State was supportive, and keen to meet. Re-instating this line would be immensely beneficial, connecting up the local area and boosting the economy, as well as encouraging people to use the train which will preserve the environment. Whilst not without it challenges, I strongly believe the long term benefits of the project would be invaluable to the infrastructure of the Mid-Wales area.
‘There is growing support for this project. Though I hope responsibility for the rail infrastructure will be devolved to the Assembly, in the meantime I hope we can enlist the support of the Secretary of State for Wales.’
