Mark Williams, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, has commented on the passing of the government’s Brexit Bill through the House of Commons, tonight, 8th February.
The Bill’s passage, which went through unamended with the support of Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party, has given the Tory Brexit Government a blank cheque to pursue the hardest possible Brexit once it has invoked Article 50.
Commenting on the vote, Mark Williams said:
“Tonight MPs had the chance to amend the Tory Brexit Bill to ensure that the British people had the final say on the terms of the deal at the end of the government’s negotiating process. Instead we saw MPs vote to give the government a blank cheque to pursue the most damaging Brexit possible.
“Throughout this Bill process, the government has continually failed to provide assurance to Welsh businesses, families and workers that their livelihoods will not be put at risk. Yet this is exactly what will happen if the government goes ahead with pulling us out of the single market.
“The Labour opposition has failed to do its job in scrutinising the Government over their plans for a hard Brexit, and instead has given their tacit support to it.
"The Liberal Democrats believe it should be for the British people to have the final say over our future relationship with Europe at the end of the negotiating process, and we will continue to fight to keep Britain open, tolerant and united."
