Ceredigion Member of Parliament Mark Williams has welcomed the response from the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport stating that the Government does not plan to re-map the Wales & Border rail franchise.
With the Wales & Border franchise up for renewal, there were concerns that the current route between Aberystwyth and Birmingham could have been split at Shrewsbury, making the franchise less attractive to potential rail franchisees.
Mark said “With refranchising in the offing and plans for the Welsh Government to control the Welsh rail franchise, there were concerns that the current cross-border route from Aberystwyth to Birmingham could have been split.
“This would have had a hugely negative impact for both the rail franchise as well as Ceredigion itself, likely impacting on our important tourism trade.
“I was glad therefore to hear that the Welsh and UK Governments have reached an understanding which will mean that the current franchise map will remain fully intact. This was greatly needed, and I hope this will ensure the focus of refranchising can now be on improving the quality of the service and satisfaction for its users.”
