Mark Williams, Member of Parliament for Ceredigion, has used the opportunity of St David’s Day to put forward a Bill in the House of Commons to allow the Welsh Assembly to designate St David’s Day a Welsh public holiday.
Mark said “St David’s Day is a hugely important day for people in Ceredigion and throughout Wales to celebrate our rich history and culture.
“Unfortunately public holidays in Wales are still decided by Westminster, however, I am lucky to be celebrating St David’s Day by proposing a Bill which would allow the Senedd, our Assembly, to make St David’s Day a national holiday.
“It has been almost a decade since Scotland made St Andrew’s Day a public holiday, and it is time that Wales was given the same power.
“It should be within the spirit of the devolution settlement that Wales, like Scotland and Northern Ireland, has the same powers to determine these matters.”
